Auntie Heather’s House of BBQ Homemade BBQ Sauce Kit (4/5)

4-4

You can make your own sauce with this fun BBQ sauce kit.  Without having to break out the measuring spoons or buying ingredients at the store, this kit lets you get your hands dirty in the kitchen with a minimal amount of effort – just add 3 cups of ketchup and reduce over heat for 20 minutes.  The end result is a very rich, sweet, subtly smoke-infused sauce with loads of onion chunks and just enough heat to add complexity.

Smell/Aroma 4

Ketchup mixed with sweet Worcestershire, brown sugar and onions.  Nothing too different, but good.

Consistency 4

A good initial thickness that gets better after being refrigerated.  It’s fun to cook your own and you can essentially control the thickness by the amount you let it simmer / reduce.  Good color, good thickness, good chunks and a natural appearance.

Taste 4

The flavor of this sauce is influenced by the 3 cups of ketchup you choose but only slightly.  I used regular flavor Heinz.  The powder packs a sweet/salty punch (with loads of dried onions) and the liquid packet tastes like a sweet & smoky soy sauce. Together the combination is great cooked or uncooked. Just enough smoke to add flavor, just enough sweet to keep it flavorful for just about anyone.

Ingredients 4

Some negative marks for high fructose corn syrup – there’s something about the packaging that I expected a more natural sauce. But overall great use of ingredients to create a great flavor.  First time I saw “Cloves” on a label.

Sugar; Honey; Brown Sugar; Natural Hickory Smoke Flavor; Molasses; Apple Cider Vinegar; Onion; Worcestershire Sauce (Vinegar, Molasses, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Anchovies, Water, Dehydrated Onion, Salt, Garlic, Tamarind Concentrate, Cloves, Natural Flavorings, Chili Pepper Extract); Spices.

So who is Heather?

I am a corporate controller who just so happens to love to BBQ!  I just started this business with the desire of making it a full-time job not only for me, but for other BBQ enthusiasts!  We are currently marketing to the specialty grocery stores such as Trader Joes, Henry’s Market, etc.  The effects of the economy have resulted in a more cost conscious consumer.  Our BBQ Sauce Kit is a very cost effective and more economical solution when compared to the bottled BBQ Sauce per oz cost.

  17. I was one of the recipients of Auntie Heather’s House of BBQ Homemade BBQ Sauce Kit contest. I made the sauce and my first impressions was it was sweet and a little on the hot side, this is straight out of the pot. About a week later, I tried it on some BBQ’d chicken I made on my Big Green egg, WOW, what an excellent BBQ Sauce! After the sauce hit the heat from the grill, it came out with just the right amount of heat and sweetness. I truly like this sauce and would serve it to company any day. Fantastic Job Auntie Heather! I will be sure to tell everyone about this unique sauce. And thank you very much for sending me this product, much appreciated!

  18. Great stuff Dave – thanks for checking back in with your review!

Made this kit over the weekend and marinated several chicken breasts and a small venison backstrap roast for a few hours, which were all grilled. I took the remainder of the sauce and smothered some venison steak tips, wrapped it all up in foil and sort of braised the tips in the sauce on the grill.

At first, I was scared the recipe would too ketchup heavy (it calls for 3 cups), so i did reduce it down to 2.5 cups. But I was pleasantly surprised after simmering for 30 min it completely lost the ketchup flavor, but morphed in a gentle sweet flavor with a touch of smoke. If i did it again I would add all the ketchup because it could only add to the flavor. All the meat came out excellent.

I would like to experiment with this again with a more gourmet variety of ketchup, I used half store brand and have heinze since I had it on hand.

    • Nice follow-up post Judd, thanks. I did the same thing… i happened to have Heinz when i tried it, but with a full 3 cups I was curious to try some other varieties as ketchup does have natural / HFCS-free / and hotter spicier variants… I am very curious to hear how your venison tastes… are there techniques you use so the flavor isn’t so gamey

This is GREAT stuff! I’ve made sauce from scratch for years and Auntie Heather’s beats mine hollow. Add in the fact that I don’t have the mess to clean up and it’s super easy to make, why bother making my own any more? I absolutely love it and I can guarantee you’ll like it. It makes a lot, so I always have a cup or so left over which just gets even better when it sits in the fridge a few days.
