What is Gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye and their derivatives such as malt or spelt.   Some people have strong allergic reactions to glutens and some of these people have what is clinically known as Celiac Disease. A set of universal dietary guidelines for Celiac Disease does not exist. The Celiac Disease Foundation (CDF) uses criteria based on the latest scientific research and advice from its’ Medical Board of Advisors. For information about Celiac Disease please contact the Celiac Disease Foundation (CDF) at (818) 990-2354, via email at cdf@celiac.org or on the web at www.celiac.org.  There are several good blogs out there for people wanting more info such as this one, I am Gluten Free, from a woman in Massachusetts who suffers from Coeliac Disease.

Words to avoid if you are looking for gluten-free products:
Farina, flour, caramel coloring, enriched flour, cereal, malt flavoring or extracts, monosodium glutamate (MSG)-may have wheat gluten in it, modified food starch, emulsifiers, stabilizers, distilled vinegar, semolina, durum, and triticale.

Why Put This BBQ Sauce List Together?
A lot of people have asked about gluten-free BBQ sauces and this is an attempt to put a lot of information in one place.

Is this the bible of Gluten-Free BBQ Sauce Lists?
NO!   Always read the label - ingredients and suppliers may change and always use common sense and remember the motto: When in doubt, leave it out.

I want to start listing some commercial gluten-free varieties (as well as known offenders) and link to some recipes here.

I am an unfortunate Celiac who can’t have corn either. I crave BBQ sauce and have yet to find one without corn syrup that still passes the celiac litmus test. My husband was tinkering and stumbled upon complete DIVINITY, I’m talking about BBQ sauce ecstacy! What companies are open to gluten-free, corn free BBQ sauce recipes? Does anyone know? This one is a winner.

  2. Hello Cate

With a daughter in law recently digagnosed with celiacs disease, I set about creating a barbecue sause recipe to fit her dietary regiman. We have now hit upon that recipe. As soon as I find a bottler and commercial kitchen to produce the product, we will bring it to market in West Michigan. I would not be adverse to sending out some samples for taste testing purposes. My e mail address is above. Bob Wohlfeil

  5. Grendeddy Dave’s BBQ Sauces use only pure honey, NO high fructose corn syrup. They are also gluten free.
This is one of the best bbq sauces around. Check it out.

First launched in 1972, Robbie’s Natural Sauces have been delighting consumers with its all natural and guilt free tastes for over 35 years. The company was recently purchased and rebranded, but the flavors and formulas remain the same. Our new labels are eye-catching, whimsical and spell out what makes Robbie’s different.

While there are other all natural gluten free sauces in the market, only Robbie’s sauces are also low sodium and low calorie. At only 30 mg of sodium per serving in their barbecue sauces, Robbie’s stands alone to serve the special dietary needs customer; including consumers with high blood pressure, diabetes and of course, wheat and gluten intolerance issues. I encourage you to turn over the label on others in this category and you will find that many of them have over 200 mg of sodium per serving.

    Hey!

You should try out Scott’s Food Products Texas Chuckwagon BBQ! It’s gluten free, and sweetened with honey. It’s kinda sweet, kinda bold, with lots of spices! Super tasty! They also make lot’s of other products, and the majority of them are gluten free :)

Give Outta the Park BBQ Sauce a try. We just got our gluten test results back, and Outta the Park BBQ Sauce has less than 3 parts per million (ppm) of gluten detected. This qualifies as “gluten-free” under labeling guidelines where products must meet several criteria and have less than 20 ppm of gluten.

Check out our website if you’d like to learn more and contact us via our website if you have a local retailer you’d like us to work with: http://www.outtatheparksauce.com

PS: the gluten-free info isn’t yet on our website - the 3rd party lab results are hot-off-the-press.

If you are highly allergic to dairy and wheat, and am intolerant of all gluten. I very, very highly recommend Organicville’s dressings and barbeque sauces(http://www.organicvillefoods.com/products.html)! My favorite is the Original… it is made with agave (a nectar from a cactus plant), no high-frutose corn syrup. Definitely a very good sauce, and a delicious one for celiacs, food allergic folks, and everyone else!

  16. TIna says:

Does anyone know for sure if “tate’s own” natural bbq sauce is gluten free. My son and husband have Celiac and I bought this tonite. It’s really good and doesn’t come out and actually list wheat, but there is Vinegar and natural smoke flavoring. It does NOT have much sugar and does not use High Fructose corn syrup. My family loves Sweet baby ray’s but all the preservatives, sodium, high fructose corn syrup etc. is not doing them any favors in regards to any kind of healthy eating.

My son and hubby and thin, but I want to keep them healthy too.

I could not find any info on who actually manufactures Tate’s Own.

  17. brian says:

Tate’s Own is manufactured by Aldi Foods (http://www.aldifoods.com). I filled out their customer service contact form to see if we can get to the bottom of this. It seems there should be an easier way to tell if Gluten-Free or not. At least, a “gluten” declaration like they do with Trans fats.

  18. Joann says:

We make the “tates own” natural bbq sauce and it is gluten free. We are pleased that you enjoy the sauce. We take pride in providing a great tasting BBQ!

  19. Jerrod Cook says:

I have a vinegar/syrup based mop and/or marinade sauce out on the market called Wild n Mild. There are two flavors to choose from, the Wild Blend having a little more of a black pepper taste over the Mild Blend, which is the sweeter version of the two. Both products are gluten free and is truly a one of a kind tasting sauce. Customers all over the country have commented on the unique flavor it gives any kind of meat or vegetable that it is cooked with, and a must try for anyone who is looking for something new. Please checkout http://www.wildnmild.com!
