Big Billy BBQ Sauce (4/5)

Guest review by Paul Zonfrillo from Team ZBQ

The best way I can describe this sauce is KC BBQ meets Carolina Vinegar sauce.  It is on the thin side for consistency, has a noticeable deal of acidity, but it is balanced out by a good dose of sweet.  The result is a full bodied [...]

Gayle’s Sweet N Sassy Apple Cider Smoke (4/5)

When I received my first plastic pouch filled with BBQ sauce, I wasn’t sure what to think.  Quickly I learned this new sauce from Gayle’s has great ingredients, excellent/unique packaging, a bold apple/smoke flavor and it’s somewhat famous.  It’s not too thick and not too thin, which makes it versatile for most types of cooking [...]

Smokin Willie’s Shanghai Style BBQ Sauce (5/5)

Ah yes, another five star sauce.  I’ve been pretty much addicted to this one since it was sent to me and I’ve tried it on everything from Angus beef burgers (gifts from Omaha Steak Co) to mac & cheese to grilled chicken and grilled cheese sandwiches.  It’s a great all purpose sauce that I can’t [...]

Nebby’s Best Barbecue Sauce (4/5)

It’s all about the fire and what happens in it.  And although it took me awhile to realize it for this particular sauce, Nebby had this figured out from the start and remained confident that his sauce would stand up to my criticism.  This is a story of a sauce that at first glance appeared [...]

Emeril’s Sweet Original BAM Barbecue Sauce (3/5)

Emeril is a huge brand that pulls in over $150 million a year in revenue across it’s media, restaurants, and products.  This is a minor speck in the portfolio and (maybe because of that) it’s average at best.  Another victim of the “large brand on auto-pilot” phenomena.  The good qualities of the sauce include a [...]

Sticky Fingers Memphis Original Barbecue Sauce (2/5)

To sum up this sauce, it’s yet another mass produced “looks like it’s from a small mom and pop store variety sauce but actually from a fairly large corporation” variety.  And that’s not always horrible.  It’s when the sauce is loaded up with ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, MSG, and artificial flavors [...]

Millers Secret Sauce Original BBQ Sauce (4/5)

Paul Miller has been making this sauce for about a year and a half.   Not long ago, he produced his first official batch and shipped me out a few samples.   I suggest you try it out!
From Paul
“Well I started making my own sauce a few years ago and after many, many hours over the [...]

Big Tex Morgan’s Boot Kickin’ Chipotle BBQ Sauce (5/5)

Up to your elbows GOOD!  Shouts the bottle.  And this sauce backs it up.
From Kim “Tex” Morgan:
This is a sauce I learned to make from my Dad. It was past down from his Dad. For years only friends and family where able to enjoy this sauce. Now I hope to let others enjoy what I’ve [...]

Trader Joe’s Bold and Smoky Kansas City Style Barbecue Sauce (5/5)

Awesome stuff. If you love the sweet/bold/smokiness of Bullseye BBQ sauce, with some additional onion and spice flavors added, you’ll love TJ’s Bold and Smoky KC Style BBQ Sauce.
And if you don’t have a Trader Joe’s near you, well… you should move.

Bone Suckin Sauce (5 of 5)

Phil Ford, a real estate appraiser and father of four in Raleigh, North Carolina, developed his sauce around 1987 while trying to copy his mother’s recipe for a western North Carolina-style barbecue sauce.
The resulting all natural, fat-free, fragrant blend of ingredients include: tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, honey, molasses, mustard, horseradish, lemon juice, onions, garlic, [...]

Bullseye Original Barbecue Sauce (4/5)

I’d like to advocate for only the little guys in the BBQ sauce world, as if all the big companies couldn’t make a good BBQ sauce product. But I’d be wrong, and quite a hypocrite, if I didn’t give Bullseye props and a solid 4/5. It just tastes great.
Way back in my [...]

Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q Championship Red Sauce (2/5)

Bob Gibson was big… around 6 foot 3 and weighed between 275 and 295. Nowadays, he’s dead, but oh boy back in the day, growing up in rural Alabama as a rail line worker, he’d invite folks over to his house where he’d barbecue practically all weekend long. Hell yeah! They say he [...]

Out of Afrika Safari Select BBQ Sauce and Dip (1/5)

It’s funny when a company wins an award and then slaps a proud emblem “Multi Award Winner” on all of their brands. The only award this particular one should win is “Most Grotesque BBQ Sauce Ever.”

Negative One - The Smell
Smells like someone puked up sweet-and-sour-sauce.
Negative Two - The Taste
Just odd and unnatural. My daughter could [...]

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que Sensous Slathering Sauce (5/5)

Clearly marketed towards big loud chopper owners, the references aren’t too strong enough to turn off those of us who aren’t bikers.
How many references to Harley’s can you find on this bottle? I found 5
The manufacturer describes this as “an aggressive, crimson-red, tomato-based sauce riddled with spices you can see, smell and taste,” and I’d [...]

Steven Raichlen Best of Barbecue Lemon Brown Sugar Barbecue Sauce (2/5)

Never buy barbecue sauce at Border’s book stores. For one, they are a friggin book store - they shouldn’t be selling barbecue sauce. And number two, it’s expensive. I picked up this large brown cylinder-jar of sauce in the hip neighborhood of Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, PA - setting me back $8.99 for 18 ounces. Worth [...]

Sweet Baby Ray’s Honey Chipotle Barbecue Sauce (4/5)

Positives: Awesome flavor, recommended replacement for the good ole big cookout standby that you use today.
Negatives: Mass market ingredients, might be considered too sweet, squeeze bottle.

Sometimes the stories behind the sauces are as tasty as their sauces. Here’s the Sweet Baby Ray’s story (from SBR website):
“It all began back in 1985 when a local Chicago [...]

Charley Biggs’ All Naturals Sweet Bourbon Barbeque Grilling and Dipping Sauce (3/5)

Positive: High scores due to creative use of natural ingredients and flavor.
Negative: Similar taste can probably be achieved by adding a little Worcestershire Sauce to a giant national brand.
Marketed as natural, gluten-free BBQ Sauces, Charley Biggs’ has several flavors to choose from, including Hot Pepper, Sweet Bourbon, and Maine Apple, which pays respect to the [...]
