Blenders Original Barbeque Sauce (3/5)

Who knew crime and punishment, Hollywood and Kansas City, and people with names like Aunt Pauline and Nana Lena could be combined in one story about BBQ sauce?  Well, it’s all true.  It could be the most interesting Behind-The-Sauce story I’ve read so far.  The flavor, on the other hand, leaves a lot to be desired…

Of course, taste is highly subjective, but I found the strong vinegar flavor to be overpowering.  If you’ve tried a few sauces you know what I mean.  The aroma as well as the flavor is just a bit too sour for my taste buds and this takes what is a great sauce execution down a few notches.  There are, however, many other great qualities about this sauce including:

  • Great story and a great website
  • Great ingredients (all-natural, gluten-free)
  • Consistency – an almost perfect lava-like flow from bottle to basting bowl and clings to meat
  • Dark look of the sauce is near perfect for an all natural sauce and damn, I just wished this tasted a bit better.

Ingredients

Tomato Puree, Sugar, Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Chile Powder, Crushed Red Pepper, Spices, Celery Seed, Garlic Powder.

  1. hi,
I am wondering who you are. I just want to say that Blenders is a tomato based sauce. Unlike the style of other regions that are vinegar based. I have to wonder if you left it out in the sun for a while with the cap off and then tasted it ??? I find it really odd that you would taste any vinegar at all. I asked about 20 people that i know if they would taste or describe Blenders as having any vinegar flavor and they all looked at me as if I was crazy and said no. Some asked is there een any in there? Especially the Chipotle flavor. Are you sure you had Blenders? Where did you buy it? Thanks for your time!

This BBQ sauce, all three flavors, is amazing. I live in Boston and found this sauce at a small market in Milton, MA. I introduced some of my friends to it and they can’t get enough. They put it on eggs, steak, chicken, vegetables. . almost anything. If you see it in the market or go on the website, I highly recommend you try it. It is not Vinegar based so I don’t know what this reviewer was tasting. Maybe too much of another kind of sauce. LOL

  3. HI, I AM THE OWNER OF BLENDERS AND I REALIZE THAT THERE ARE LOTS OF SAUCES OUT THERE AND NOT EVERYONE IS GOING TO LIKE MINE. THE ONLY REASON I AM COMMENTING ON YOUR REVIEW IS THAT YOU SAID IT HAS TOO MUCH VINEGAR. THIS IS WHAT ALERTED ME THAT SOMETHING MUST BE WRONG. OUR SAUCE IS A TOMATO BASED SAUCE NOT VINEGAR.KANSAS CITY SAUCES HAVE VERY LITTLE VINEGAR IF MAYBE FOR PRESERVING IT NATURALLY. NORTH CAROLINA IS KNOWN FOR VINEGAR. I AM LOOKING AT THE PICTURE OF THE BOTTLE AND A LOT OF THINGS DON’T LOOK RIGHT TO ME. ONE IT IS A DISCONTINUED LABEL AND VERY OLD BOTTLE. I HAVE TO WONDER WHERE YOU GOT IT. WAS IT OLD AND SITTING IN THE SUN AND TURNED? LIKE A FINE WINE THAT CAN HAPPEN WITH BBQ SAUCE. I INVITE YOU TO TRY IT AGAIN. I WILL BE HAPPY TO SEND A BOTTLE. PEOPLE LOVE OUR SAUCE ( UNLESS THEY ARE ALLERGIC TO TOMATOES.)I ASKED ABOUT 20 PEOPLE IF THEY TASTED VINEGAR IN OUR SAUCES AFTER I READ THIS AND THEY SAID NO…IS THERE VINEGAR IN IT? ANYWAY THANKS FOR THE REST OF THE COMMENTS. TAKE CARE, JERI BLENDER

I worked with your Aunt Pauline at American International Pictures. She was so very sweet. Pam & I took her to see Neil Diamond. Pam sent me some sauce for my Birthday. Your Aunt use to make it and bring it to the office. So I’m now ordering more! Actually, I was also from Excelsior, which is where Blenders Cafe was! Small world.

Is this the same Blender’s that had a restaurant at 36th and State Ave. in Kansas City, Kansas in the 1950s. I am trying to find some history of the restaurant. Would appreciate some help! Thanks!

      Hi Jeri,
I am your cousin laurie Jacobson. My dad – Leslie Jacobson was Dora jacobsons son. Every summer we would come to Cousin Pauline and Aunt Lena’s restaurant and hang out there I especially loved the cook Sue and the others we had so much fun

  4. Sorry Jeri I still think it tastes like vinegar – all three varieties.

My tastebuds are my tastebuds – I’m sure some people love the taste, but you can’t tell me to taste something different. Don’t go too far by calling me crazy or that I was drinking… at that point your reactions become a bit childish.

3/5 is not that bad… it’s what I’d classify as a decent sauce.

  5. by the way, your director of sales (DGW) sent the sauce to me and I clearly state that my reviews are 100% objective.

  6. Hi Brian,
I reread both of my emails to you. i never called you crazy or inferred that you were drinking….As i said I know people have different taste buds. I totally respect your opinion. My concern was that you had sauce that was expired by looking at the label. Having never had anything but great reviews I was curious. I appreciate your time. This is one reason texting and email are not always the best avenue for communicating. It can be so easily misunderstood. All the best to you. My offer still stands 🙂 Happy Tasting! Jeri

Jeri, my family ate many meals at Blender’s and I loved everything, but especially the chocolate pie. I have never found another chocolate pie that comes close to the wonderful flavor. Any idea of what the “secrete” ingredient might be?

I a living in Simi Valley and have stumbled across your web sight by accident and am SO EXCITED to know that #1 you are continuing in your Aunt Pauline’s footsteps with her yummy sauce!, and #2 that maybe we can have a chance to reconnect and catch up on the last 20 years of our lives! E-mail me when you get this so we can set up a time to call and talk, please? There are times when something happens and I think “where’s Jeri?” and “I wish I could talk to her!” I especially miss the “love happily…”

    Jeri,
My Uncle is Lee Schuman and we just celebrated his 94th birthday!!!! We were telling stories about the “old days” when Blenders came up for discussion and so many beautiful memories of Pauline and Lena and the bbq sauce. Just wanted to say hi and if you have any old pics of the place and could scan/send to me Uncle Lee would love it. Take care and happy BBQ❤️
