More information

What is Gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye and their derivatives such as malt or spelt.   Some people have strong allergic reactions to glutens and some of these people have what is clinically known as Celiac Disease. A set of universal dietary guidelines for Celiac Disease does not exist. The Celiac Disease Foundation (CDF) uses criteria based on the latest scientific research and advice from its’ Medical Board of Advisors. For information about Celiac Disease please contact the Celiac Disease Foundation (CDF) at (818) 990-2354, via email at cdf@celiac.org or on the web at www.celiac.org.  There are several good blogs out there for people wanting more info such as this one, I am Gluten Free, from a woman in Massachusetts who suffers from Coeliac Disease.

Words to avoid if you are looking for gluten-free products:
Farina, flour, caramel coloring, enriched flour, cereal, malt flavoring or extracts, monosodium glutamate (MSG)-may have wheat gluten in it, modified food starch, emulsifiers, stabilizers, distilled vinegar, semolina, durum, and triticale.

  1. I have come across a new product line of gluten free, all natural and vegetarian sauces and mustards. They are call royal fireworks and have different bbq sauces and mustards. Awesome… label is as clean as I have ever seen. I am now a big fan…
those who need or crave gluten free products should investigate. They even have a cookbook using their products. I think they are also an Ohio Proud product. Nice to know.
Best of luck with your search.

  2. David Rodgers says

I’m concerned/curious … Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce actually says “Gluten Free” right on the label but it’s on your list here as known to contain gluten ingredients.

    • Cheryl Mackmer says

I have a bottle of honey Barbecue Sauce of Sweet Baby Ray’s and it does say gluten free, but if you look at the ingredients it has modified food starch and caramel color listed and those are two of the ingredients that tells you that there is gluten in the product.

      • Cendoria says

        Thank you!!

      • Mel Harvey says

Modified food starch and caramel coloring doesnt necessarily mean it contains gluten. They can be made from different products like corn. I was under the impression that if a product is labeled gluten free, then it has to be in compliance to the regulations.

        • Mel Harvey says

But I’ve heard a lot of people say they’ve had reactions from Sweet Baby Rays. Maybe the company should reevaluate their product.

  3. Thank you for all you do with all the reviews. It makes picking items alot easier.

  4. Heather Figley says

Curley’s Famous Barbecue Sauce from CHS Inc., Hutchinson, KS 67501, (800) 835-5006, http://www.curleysbbq.com

  5. just to give you a heads up… Nephew’s BBQ Sauce and Rub Company has three Gluten Free and No High Fructose Corn Syrup products on the market NOW… Ghostly Pumpkin, Cherry’Potle and our New Lil’Buddy’s Mustard Sauce… Our Peachy Potle will be out by July and will follow the same MO… http://www.nephewsbbq.com

  6. Do the black worded items have gluten and are the other items gluten free? I didn’t see an explanation

    • I don’t think so (not the site designer here, so I can’t be sure, but…) I know the first item on the list (Annie’s) is well known for making GF foods. They make a wonderful GF mac’n’cheese, for example. I can’t imagine they’d have gluten in their bbq sauce. I suspect the color difference may be those that do and those that do not have a link to a bbq sauce GF page on their website.

  7. Fred Salinas says

The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint has a line of Gluten Free Sauces and Marinades. http://WWW.TheShedBBQ.com

  8. I had a terrible reaction from Sweet Baby Ray’s even though the information I found at the time said it was GF. This was about a year ago but I remember being so sick that I’ve avoided the sauce since. Thanks for the list!

  9. George’s BBQ Sauce is gluten free in all 3 flavors! http://www.georgesbbqsauce.com

  10. Sweet Baby Ray’s Is NOT Gluten free

    • Also, Sweet Baby Ray’s #1 ingredient is the poison known as High Fructose Corn Syrup! That really sucks. It’s crap.

  11. Wegmans in our area, Western New York, has 4 BBQ sauces that are Gluten Free, Vegan and Lactose Free. We have tried two of them, the Memphis and the Kansas City and both are delicious. No High Fructose Corn Syrup either. Check out wegmans.com for locations.

  12. Sticky Fingers Smokehouse Memphis Original Barbecue Sauce is Gluten Free.. Their web address is http://www.stickyfingersauce.com and their telephone number is (855)-493-9861

  13. I loved Cookies BBQ Sauce, when I lived in St Louis. Now in the outskirts of Phoenix, not sure which are GF. I have not seen Cookies here. I sure miss BBQ chicken and pork. And refuse to eat out. Still much cross contamination issues in restaurants. Makes me not want to trust eating out! Any national chains of BBQ restaurants that are GF?

    • There are a handful of GF BBQ sauces. We also try to avoid HFCS. There is a version of KC Masterpiece that is GF, I have only seen it at COSTCO.

As far as restaurants, it is way better than it was 10 years, or even 5 years ago. There are even some restaurants in the Valley that specialize in GF, and several good pizza places with good GF options. Most BBQ places however offer salads as GF options 🙁

If you have a smart phone, I would suggest downloading the app “Find Me Gluten Free”. Cross contamination still happens, but not as often as it once did.

      • Thanks for your input, Mark. Costco is a good option for me. Sad about BBQ restaurants. Bandana’s in St Louis was the only one I could feel safe eating in. But one must, of course, announce they are GF to get assistance/appropriate service.

        • Also when eating out, watch for some kind of gluten free awareness certification that shows the restaurant trains their people for gluten free awareness. Although we have found some restaurants that don’t have such certification and have been fine.
My wife (who is Celiac) says she has eaten at Joe’s BBQ in Gilbert with no problem and their website indicates they are gluten free friendly.

    • Picky Vicki Gourmet BBQ Sauces is available in 4 award winning gluten free flavors. They also have NO HFCS.

      • Try Bill’s Best BBQ. I used to work for a non profit for celiac disease, and this sauce was sent for us to try in the office.
