Grumpy’s Goodnight Loving BBQ Sauce (4/5)

In 2006, Jeff Greenberg of Grumpy’s foods set out to make a sauce similar to the one at a local Texas-style BBQ joint in Denver called Frank’s Barbecue.  While he admits he may not have perfected a clone of Frank’s sauce, the flavors did come out great and won a few Scoville awards in 2007 and 2008.

In this sauce, they took the Grumpy’s base and added Worcestershire sauce and spices which adds a savory and salty addition to the Grumpy’s line-up.  For those who like a little bit of heat, mixed with a little bit of spice, and something “that’s not so sweet” (I hear this a lot)  – you should enjoy Grumpy’s Goodnight Loving.

Personally I’m starting to move away from calling anything NC-style, KC-style, Texas-style, and SC-style because they tend to pigeon-hole the sauce into a very small area.  Everytime I get a bottle of sauce that says NC style on it and it ends up tasting like KC style, it’s confusing and often not helpful in describing the sauce’s attributes to most people. Personally I’d like to see more sauces highlight the spice elements that tend to be hidden within the labeled ingredient called “spices”.
