Hog Heaven Apricot Jalapeno BBQ Sauce (5/5)

This is part of the Hog Heaven batch I received last week in pre-bottled stage.  The line-up also includes Smokehouse, Smokehouse Heat, and  Apple Chipotle.

Aroma

It smells almost like sweet apricot juice with a hint of jalapeno in the smell.  If I was wearing a blindfold and you put this in front of my nose, I would try to drink it.

Consistency

Very thick.  Gloppy!  Similar to how a natural honey moves in a jar.  The color is like yellow-brown like a honey-mustard.  Little specks of jalapeno are visible from the bottle which adds interest!

Ingredients

Good stuff – no high fructose corn syrup, no glutens, and no preservatives. Does contain natural smoke flavoring (liquid smoke).

Taste Before Cooking

The Apricot-Jalapeno’s flavor profile worked really well for me.  The sauce was sweet but the apricot flavor wasn’t so strong to be like a candy… It reminded me of one of my favorite craft beers Magic Hat  #9.

The Line Up

Taste After Cooking

Not much changed with the flavor profile after cooking.  The sweet is reduced a bit, but that part is largely up to you the griller.  The longer you wait before applying the sauce, the sweeter it will be. The easiest way to do this right is to make sure the meat is pretty much done, then coat the meat with the sauce, then crank up the heat and sear it up a bit.  I think there is someone trying to patent that idea but it’s pretty simple.

Puddled Goodness

A little extra charred!

Batch 2!

Bottom Line.

You may be thinking “Who eats Apricot BBQ sauce?”  But don’t knock it until you try it.  I was pleasantly surprised.  The blend of Apricot and Jalapeno has enough sweet and enough heat to get your tastebuds moving around, out of their comfort zone.  I thoroughly enjoyed the flavor and I can easily say it’s the best apricot sauce I’ve ever tried (although it’s also the only apricot sauce I’ve tried). Great flavor. Great glop-factor.   Great sauce.
