La Pan’s Et Tu Brute Bloody Mary Caesar

Before I became somewhat devoted to BBQ Sauce, I used to go on little explorations of food topics.   When I was going to Umass Amherst I was addicted to DP Dough, a calzone shop with about 30 different types of ‘zones.  My roommate and I hung up their flyer on the wall and it became our mission to make sure we tried every single one of them.   About 15 of them through I became stuck on their Chicken Bacon Cheddar and that was that.

Later in life I developed similar other “best food searches.”  Buffalo chicken sandwiches.  Beer.  Burgers.  And at one point, Bloody Mary’s.  I basically wanted to have close to the best out there and when I had guests I wanted to make sure they had good flavors.

One of my favorite Bloody Mary mixes is called Cape Cod Premium Bloody Mary Mix…  sweet and sour and spicy all wrapped up into a single bottle – just add vodka, a little pepper, and a celery – and I’m good to go.   That mixture gave me one of my favorite Mary’s of all time…

And I gotta say this one beats it!

The flavors are incredible.  Picture the best tomato juice with a salty bouillion flavor and a slight hint of the ocean.  The very subtle clam flavor just adds so much to the mix (don’t knock it til you’ve tried it).  Overall it’s a very complex, very full flavor without any “off” flavors.    On the heat scale, I thought at first it was a bit weak but it slowly caught up to me and delivered tingly lips and overall mouth warmth.  Mmm.  La Pan really knows how to make a Bloody Mary.

To summarize – When I first tried a Mrs T Bloody Mary, I knew there had to be something better out there.  When I found the Cape Cod mix, I thought I found my match.  But Et Tu Brute takes the cake.    It’s a great mix with a great name and a great flavor.

“Et tu, Brute?” is a Latin phrase often used poetically to represent the last words of Roman dictator Julius Caesar to his friend Marcus Brutus at the moment of his murder by stabbing. It can be variously translated as “Even you, Brutus?”,”And you, Brutus?”, “You too, Brutus?”, “Thou too, Brutus?” or “And thou, Brutus?”. Immortalized by Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar (1599), the quotation is widely used in Western culture to signify the utmost betrayal. (Wikipedia)

  1. Nice article, especially the introduction 🙂

But I think that the original phrase used by Caesar was “Tu quoque, mi fili” (you too, my son)

  2. Thanks for the comment Nick. I didn’t learn this in my youth, therefore I went straight to Wikipedia (so it’s got to be 100% accurate – I’m kidding).

Looks like it’s still up for debate what his last words were.

    But interesting stuff nonetheless.

I also like Bloody Marys. Instead of celery I use a big spear dill pickle in mine… I have also fell in love with using bloody Mary mix in my home made chili. Gives it a nice flavor…. I will have to keep my eyes open and give this mix a try… good review!

  4. I use straight V8 with beef broth, bitters, Worcestershire sauce (Lee & Perrins, of course), hot sauce, black pepper. And vodka.

Instead of celery I like to drop a couple of pickled asparagus spears in to finish it off.

  5. Tried them all guys. If you like Bloody Mary’s you usually have to make them yourself because all the mixes out there are a waste of time…until I found Uncle Dougie’s Torpedo Juice. Absolutely fantastic. Shake it up good, it is a very thick rich mix…finally a mix that is better than “home made” :):):)!! One note – it packs a little delayed heat. After ordering from the site I found a bunch of very good, great sauces. These guys know what they are doing.

Nice article you have here! 🙂 I’ve been a great fan of Bloody Marys. You should try a brand I just discovered called LAVA (www.lavabmm.com). It’s the best bloody mary mix I think since it tastes great and uses whole non-gmo San Marzano tomatoes and is gluten free. =)
