Puppum’s Three Dogs Spicy Habanero BBQ Sauce (4/5)

It’s a dog-sauce-dog world for the makers of this sauce based in Wakefield, Rhode Island.

And although Rhode Island is the smallest state in the country, this sauce packs a big, stately flavor.

Outside the Bottle

The label is great and clearly the design of a professional.  It’s called Three Dogs and appropriately, we see the three cute dogs.  We also see three little habaneros right under the dogs’ noses.

The copy writing tells us it’s thick, with that spicy robust flavor that barbecue lovers crave.  Let’s put that to the test in the next section!

Inside the Bottle

The dominant characteristics are a dark sweetness, a fruity tang, and a spicy kick – you can taste the brown sugary tomato base mixed with vinegar and habanero.

The spice level is just about right – like a Tabasco sauce so it sneaks up on you, but never gets overpowering.

The ingredients are fairly complex with real tomatoes, tomato puree, Worcestershire & soy sauce, brown sugar, molasses, olive oil, liquid smoke, garlic, ginger, habanero, and spices….

3-ingredients

The consistency is chunky yet a little thin. (How can that be, you ask).  Well, it’s kind of like a can of diced tomatoes – where the sauces tomato and spices are swimming together in a pool of water so it’s chunky, yet thin.   It uses a tomato puree as a base to achieve that appearance, unlike most sauces that use tomato sauce or ketchup.  One drawback to the tomato puree base selection is that some of it slides off the meat product so that the cooked product doesn’t become as caked on as it could be.

As a cooked sauce, it is still tasty as it is uncooked, but not unique enough to payoff the expectation from such a great bottle and cause (they do donate 10% of proceeds to Animal Rescues).

Bottom Line
A great flavor uncooked that loses a little oomph in the area of cooking performance and “stick to meat”.  Still a great tasting sauce.
