Grill Plate from Grill Innovations

For this week’s review I was sent the Grill Plate from Ed Hamlin at Grill Innovations.

The Grill Plate is an all aluminum cooking plate designed to allow you to bake foods on your gas grill. It basically turns your grill into a convection oven. The Grill Plate is 16 inches by 12 inches and is 1 inch thick.

The bottom of the Grill Plate has a V-shaped angle which directs the heat to the ends of the plate. As the heat rises from the grill, the two heat forces collide, causing a convection process due to the rising force of heat. In the center of the plate, a 1 inch air gap provides insulation to prevent burning the bottom of the dish you’re baking. This process allows you to bake cookies, cinnamon rolls, cakes, pies, lasagna; pretty much anything you can bake in your oven.

The first thing I did before I started using the Grill Plate was to make sure my grill was clean. Once that was done I fired up my grill to get to the target temperature of 350 degrees since that’s what the chocolate chip cookie recipe called for.

While the grill was heating up I placed little round balls of chocolate chip cookie dough on a cookie sheet.

Once the grill was up to 350 degrees it was time to place on the Grill Plate followed by the tray of chocolate chip cookies.

It’s important to note that you don’t preheat the Grill Plate. This insures that the bottom of the dish or tray you’re baking won’t receive too much preliminary heat resulting in a burned bottom.

I closed the grill lid and left the cookies go for the 13 minutes the recipe called for. After that time was up I opened the lid and removed the hot cookie sheet from the grill with an oven mitt and brought the cookies inside to plate.

My wife took a few of the cookies and made chocolate chip cookie sandwiches with sprinkles, which our daughter loved. (The big kid in me loved them too, lol!)

The next morning I woke up and decided to bake some Pillsbury Grands made with Cinnabon cinnamon topped with cream cheese icing for breakfast. While the grill was heating up to 350 degrees I placed the cinnamon rolls on the tray.

Once the grill was up to temp I placed on the Grill Plate followed by the tray of cinnamon rolls. I then closed the lid and allowed the cinnamon rolls to bake for 25 minutes.

After the 25 minutes I removed the tray of cinnamon rolls and brought them inside to ice and eat.

I will have to admit I ended up eating 3 of the 5 cinnamon rolls since I have a pretty big sweet tooth, lol.

Final Thoughts

The Grill Plate worked exactly as advertised if not better. Both the chocolate chip cookies and cinnamon rolls turned out perfectly.

I am someone who’s always looking for a new and fun way to cook food on my gas grill and this product will allow me to cook so many things I would normally have to use my oven for.

If you’re someone who wants a product that allows you to bake many different kinds of food on your gas grill then make sure to look into the Grill Plate from Grill Innovations.

That is really cool never heard or seen anything like it. I would see this as a great product for summer time as you can bake items outside and not have to turn the oven on inside your house. Also you could take gas grill camping and bake some stuff on site. I imagine gas grill would heat up fast than an oven. Great review Jay!

    • Thanks Kevin! You’re exactly right about that during the summer months so the oven doesn’t make your house to hot inside. I never thought about taking it camping, but that would be pretty cool as well!

I also thought it would be good to have if you happen to loose your electricity for a few days so you can bake on your gas grill while your electric is out.

Thanks for leaving a comment Kevin!

Jay, do you think this would work with a pellet grill or charcoal as well or just gas? Great looking baked goods!

  3. Great review as always Jay, mmm now I want a chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich!

    • Thanks Brian! A chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich does sound good right about now. I’ll have to try that next time and also make a batch with some bacon in them too 🙂 Thanks for leaving a comment!

I own the first grill plate. Had it about 4 yrs now. I purchased it when my oven broke and boy did it come in handy. I love this product and even though my kitchen has been remolded, I still continue to use the grill plate. I made rosemary potatoes last night on the grill plate. It was a life saver especially in the winter months. Happy to be a grill plate fan!!!
