Maverick PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer

For this week’s review I was sent the Maverick PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer from Darren Keller at Maverick Industries, Inc.

Maverick Industries, Inc. was founded in 1982 and is currently one of the largest producers of digital thermometers in the United States.

The PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer is an NSF approved commercial grade Type K Thermocouple thermometer with an integral stainless precision micro tip probe. It also has a temperature response time of 3-4 seconds.

The PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer is water and dust resistant to IP44 and shock proof against multiple 3’ drops onto a concrete floor. It has a temperature range of -40° F (-40° C) to 450° F (230° C) and comes with a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Calibration which guarantees performance and accuracy to NIST standards.

It has a large backlit LCD readout that is perfect for early morning or night time cooks and an auto power save after 5 minutes of inactivity to conserve the 3 AAA batteries that are included. It also has a low battery indicator and this device can be set to Celsius or Fahrenheit, whichever you prefer.

The first thing I had to do after opening the PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer was to compare it side by side with one of my 3 Thermapens. The PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer is longer and a tad wider and thicker than the Thermapen. Its dimensions closed are 7.4″ x 2.2″ x 0.7″ and the Thermapen dimensions closed are 6.1″ x 1.85″ x 0.75″. The PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer feels more rugged and more protected than the Thermapen because of the rubber bumpers that run around it. In one of the pictures below you can see that the PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer was spot on with my red Thermapen.

Now for some more pictures of the PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer. As you can see in the pictures below the thermometer has a flush tab that you slide down to open the battery compartment which holds the 3 AAA batteries.

On the front of the PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer is a nice handy food temperature chart right below the large backlit LCD readout.

While I was taking pictures of the PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer I was also waiting for my Weber kettle grill to get up to temp for the beer can chicken cook so I could test out this thermometer’s speed and accuracy. Once my kettle was up to temp I removed the lid and placed in a 4 1/2 pound beer can chicken.

After 3 1/2 hours I removed the kettle lid to check the beer can chicken to make sure the thigh was up to the proper temp of 170° F. As you can see in the picture below the PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer read 170.1° F which the thermometer registered at in around 3 seconds.

I then decided to compare the speed and accuracy of the PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer with my red Thermapen. I was really happy to see that the PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer was as fast and accurate as my Thermapen.

After that I took both thermometers and the beer can chicken inside and let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing. The chicken was very moist and tender and it also had a great smoke flavor that everyone in my family loved including myself.

Final Thoughts

The Maverick PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer is a pretty impressive thermometer that’s as fast and accurate as a Thermapen. It also felt more rugged and sturdy in my hand.

I really liked the fact that it has a large backlit LCD readout which the Thermapen lacks. This will definitely be my go to thermometer when I do early morning or night time cooks. I also liked the quick release carabiner belt clip which makes it nice for quick retrieval during cooks.

I do have a feeling I will be changing the 3 AAA batteries more often on the PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer because of the backlit LCD readout, but I think it’s an awesome feature and well worth it to me.

If you’re someone who cooks often in little to no light situations or even during the day and want a very fast and accurate thermometer, then make sure to look into the Maverick PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer.

I’ve been waiting for this one to come out. I just got the ET-732 and have yet to fully trust it. My current probe for “instant” runs about8 – 10 seconds, I will be upgrading that next. Thanks for the honest, sensible review!

    • Thanks so much Steve! I definitely think the Maverick PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer is worth looking into when you decide to upgrade. Thanks for leaving a comment!

  3. I have to agree that the backlight LCD readout is very nifty with this compared to the Thermapen. Looks like it will be great competition for Thermapen.

    • Thanks for leaving a comment Kevin! I really like my Maverick PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer! The backlit LCD is such a great feature! It really comes in handy during those early morning cooks.

Well, this sucks! I was all prepared to put a thermapen on my birthday wish list, and now I’m not completely sure it’s what I want. Thanks, Jay! 😉 Seriously, I’ve never owned a fancy thermometer. As a matter of fact, I even stopped using a probe a long time ago. I just check it when I think it’s done. Having said that, I feel like I should own an instant-read, even if it’s merely to look more professional. So, which one should it be? Or is it just too close?

    P.S. Great review..again! 🙂

    • Thanks so much for leaving a comment Chad! To be honest I’m a big fan of both the Maverick PT-100BBQ Pro-Temp Thermometer and the Thermapen. Two big things I like about this thermometer over the Thermapen is that it feels more rugged and sturdy in my hand and its large backlit LCD readout which the Thermapen lacks. I recommend reading my reviews on both again and then figure out which one best suits your needs. Glad you liked my review and thanks again for leaving a comment!
