Five Thumbs up. 2 Stars. I mean…. The other way around. 2 Thumbs up and five stars for this puppy. Sorry for the mixup – I’ve been drinking too much of Guy Fieri’s Bourbon Brown Sugar BBQ Sauce. Ok, I’m not really drunk on the Bourbon in this sauce, but this sauce is sweet, complex, and rich with notes of citrus, black pepper, molasses, and of course, bourbon. The flavors are intoxicating on food or on the side as a dipping sauce and – thank you Guy – the sauce does not contain high fructose corn syrup. This is going to move faster than most one-man shop operations, and you didn’t choose the cheapo sweetening option. Thank you.
When I got the package from Guy, I noticed the box itself was HEAVY. It had to hold four bottles of sauce, so it made sense. Each bottle was individually wrapped in bubble wrap giving my kids about 10 minutes of fun, ending in an argument over who gets to pop the last bubble.
Good BBQ sauce copywriting is tailored to each bottle and makes a bold claim but accurately describes the flavors within. This is a perfect example of how it’s done.
Nutrition facts and ingredients – no high fructose corn syrup buuuut keep in mind folks that cornstarch and xanthan gum are also corn-based thickeners/fillers and are not health foods…
Look at that consistency and the SPECKS. I love specks. Specks are largely responsible for providing you, the BBQ lover, with complete taste-bud stimulation. You’re seeing a little onion, some garlic, and the big ones are the black pepper flakes. Without the specks, the sauce would still be good, but the specks wake up your tastebuds. The specks seek out your tongue and jump all over it, looking for the right tastebud to wake up. This is what is known as flavor complexity and it’s what I look for in a sauce. Great stuff.
Even though it’s near the top of what I’ve had, it’s not a perfect sauce. Then again… I still have not found the ultimate/perfect sauce. And that’s good for all you Free Sauce Friday lovers… because if I did settle on a single, world’s greatest sauce, this website – and the giveaways – are over ! 🙂
