Mad Dog Chipotle BBQ Sauce (5/5)

07 July 2011 ~ 4 Comments

David “Mad Dog” Ashley knows how to make a sauce and once again has chosen the best ingredients versus cutting costs with cheap sweeteners and artificial enhancement.  From the use of actual tomatoes (versus ketchup or concentrate) to the choice of secret spices – and the natural sweetness of molasses, the sauce hits your taste buds on all levels.  The only thing that was surprising was the heat level.  Maybe he could put least a picture of a pepper to indicate this sauce is probably as hot if not hotter than your run of the mill hot sauce.  But maybe he shouldn’t.  After all, we’re talking about the Mad Dog – and that’s just how he rolls.

Excellent copywriting describes the flavor but downplays the heat.

Great ingredients selection…

It’s the deep rich flavor, the deep dark hue, and the excellent ingredients choices that made this reviewer happy.

I can attest to the fact that the sauce is hotter than you expect. But that’s a good thing, IMO.

While I LOVE anything Chipotle, it is my favorite chile profile, how hot would you rate the heat of this sauce 1-5?

Being a Chilehead, all hot sauce is fair game. And I find the Mad Dog lineup to be one of my favorites.

But I just do not care for a ton of heat in my BBQ sauce. I like the traditional sweet, sticky, savory BBQ sauces. Oh, and the mustard based sauces from Alabama. And the traditional sauce from… you get the picture. I’m a traditional BBQ guy that loves a good hot sauce.

    Thanks Brian from Brian.

Thanks for commenting Brian, please come by again soon. I’m a follower of your site as well.

This sauce is probably 4/5 on the heat scale as far as BBQ sauces go, but in terms of the “real” hot sauces this is well below the radar. It’s mouth hot, but doesn’t make you sweat or hiccup or any of that stuff you guys do to yourselves. :)

Ha! Yea we can get stupid with the hot sauce. But I’m really from the camp of the “twain shall not meet” crew. I love the “hot” in my hot sauce, and the “sweet and sticky and savory” in my BBQ sauce.

Based on your excellent review tho, I will have to try this sauce. And Mad Dog rarely disappoints.
