Sauce People: Old Timer Rubs and BBQ Sauce

30 August 2011 ~ 4 Comments

For too long, I’ve focused on the products but through the years I’m just starting to realize that it’s the people that make this job fun.   I’ve met cooks, chefs, reviewers, critics, wannabees, pros, winners, losers, sauce fanatics, chileheads, videobloggers, podcasters, and more – all through the BBQ Sauce lens!

I’d like to kick off this new series with an interview with a true winner, Linda & Bob Gantt from Old Timer BBQ Rubs and Sauces.   They are fresh off winning the TOP SAUCE at the growing Getting Sauced event in Austin Texas this year (by the way, I really wanted to be there – but my wife is due for our third baby in about 3-4 weeks which was too close to be flying across the country).

My 10 Questions to Linda & Bob:

1.  Who are you / who is the owner?   Does it have something to do with the name of the sauce?

We are Bob and Linda.  Linda is the owner.  Yes, Robert is the “old timer” and we like to smoke/grill and barbeque the “old timey way”, slow; with friends and family.

2. Where are you from?

We are from South Carolina lived in N. Carolina, Georgia and Tenn. but relocated to Texas six years ago.

3. When did you start making BBQ sauce?

Old Timer Rubs started in late sixties while catering what is called in the Carolina’s a Pig Pickin’ for family, neighbors and friends.

4. Why did you start making BBQ sauce?

Never happy with the commercially available sauces and rubs, we committed to creating my own barbeque sauces and rubs. We decided then to produce high quality seasonings that taste great and are healthy as well. You can be assured that our products will always be all natural spices and herbs free of MSG, preservatives, flavor enhancers or fillers.   We offer you high quality products to meet barbeques & Grilling needs at a wholesale price.

5. What is different about your sauce?

We like the smoke taste in meat not overbearing rubs and sauce. Our rubs and sauce enhance the smoked meat.

6. What has been the biggest success you’ve had so far?

One of the biggest successes is our most recent winning of GettinSauced Event in Austin, TX. Aug.27, 2011.

7. How is business?

Businesses is good but never have enough.

8. How can people get your sauce?

You can visit www.oldtimerbbqrubs.com

9. What can people expect next year from Old Timer BBQ?

We will have several more new products available later this month that will complement our present product line as well as a custom built wooden Gift Box for our products which will serve as a retail display on a counter top as well and Our Chili Seasoning Mix and Southwestern Cornbread Mix.

10. What is your favorite meal?

Smoked pork, potato salad, cold slaw

By accident, I started using Old Timers when it first hit the marker and I am impressed. It seems to blend in the meat, enhancing the flavor but you can still taste the meat. I am a dedicated user now.

    Great Job Old Timer!
