Uncle Joe’s Honey Mesquite Sauce-in-a-Bag (5/5)

At first, I didn’t really like the BBQ-Sauce-in-a-Bag concept until I realized some of these mixes are in fact some of the tastiest BBQ rubs and seasoning packets I’ve ever come across.   So maybe I should start reviewing some BBQ rubs…

The “sauce in the bag” category is a bit of a niche and although it’s not for everyone, it’s got the feeling of making your own sauce without much of the work. This flavor was great – a smoky sweet flavor called Honey Mesquite.  I liked the fact the included many different ways to heat it, offered a variety of sizes and even told you how to measure out a single serving if you wanted to do that.   It’s easy to make using a simple 3-2-1 ratio of liquid (apple juice, beer, or water) to spice blend to ketchup (I used Hunt’s Non-HFCS variety and water in mine).

I also tried this as a rub on chicken and on some burgers and it works really well – and adds a fantastic flavor.

It’s got a good smell and that liquid-smoky-mesquite flavor that I can only describe as Western.  I just picture a cowboy when I smell that familiar scent.

Because you make it yourself, it’s very controllable.  I found when I reduced it for the best flavor it was not too thick to be considered gloppy and not too thin.

The spice pack that comes along with the package is mostly smoky and sweet and can be used as a rub on its own.  Once the sauce is made and combined, I noticed a little kick of spice come out – fueled by Chili Peppers, Paprika, and Garlic.

Sugar, Corn Starch, Chili Peppers, Spices, Garlic, Hickory Smoke Flavor [Maltodextrin, Natural Smoke Flavor and Hydrated Silicon Dioxide (Free Flow Agent)], Paprika, Vinegar Powder (Maltrodextrin, Modified Food Starch and White Distilled Vinegar), and Silicon Dioxide (Free Flow Agent).
