This is part 2 of the Hog Heaven batch I received last week in pre-bottled stage. The line-up also includes Smokehouse, Apricot Jalapeno, and Apple Chipotle.
Aroma
It’s got a nice aroma – like the Smokehouse original it smells like a classic, tomato-based BBQ sauce with strong notes of onion and smoke – this one also has a slight peppery smell (a detective might deduct that it could be something to do with the peppers!)
Consistency
Just right. Not too thin, not too thick. Appearance and usage of actual spices.
Ingredients
It’s all good stuff – no high fructose corn syrup, no glutens, and no preservatives. Does contain natural smoke flavoring (liquid smoke) which some well known BBQ folks (Greg Rempe, Cyndi Allison) don’t like. Personally, I have no issue with it and think that most folks buying grocery-brand BBQ sauce expect it.
Taste Before Cooking
Like the original with heat and more pepper flavor. A little bit more exclusive for folks that like it a on the hot side. Ira was considering calling it fire, but it’s really not that hot. It’s like having a few shots of Tabasco added to each serving of BBQ Sauce, like a hot store-brand salsa but not fire-blazing like a specialty hot sauce.
Taste After Cooking
After cooking the heat from the spices cools down a notch or two, but a strong pepper flavor remains.
Bottom Line.
Hog Heaven Smokehouse Heatis an great sauce for folks who like a traditional smoky BBQ sauce flavor – with a little extra heat that you can taste. It’s got great ingredients too. Like Smokehouse original, it’s tasty stuff with a wide broad appeal, but it lacked a standout quality that would warrant a rating of five.
